Awareness camp for construction workers held

Shillong, 25 Aug: A one-day awareness-cum-registration camp for muster-roll workers of eight divisions in East Khasi Hills district of Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department was held at the Meghalaya Bharat Scouts and Guides headquarters here on Friday.

The programme was organised by the PHE Chief Engineer's (CE) office, in collaboration with the Deputy Labour Commissioner's office, under the Meghalaya Building and Other Construction Workers' Welfare Board.

State Labour Minister Dr M Ampareen Lyngdoh attended the programme as chief guest in the presence of Additiol CE (PHE Zone-III) SK Blah, Joint Labour Commissioner RW Wahlang, Executive Engineer (Sewerage & Draige Division) D Marbaniang and Sub-divisiol Officer (Mawsynram PHE sub-division) Korbarsing Nongbsaw, among others.

In her iugural address, Lyngdoh said construction workers and muster roll workers of PHE Department should carry out their works with dignity and pride. She said the Labour Department has a scheme called the Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Scheme for registration of construction workers and to provide health and other welfare benefits to them and their immediate family members.

Urging the muster roll workers of PHE Department and workers involved in building and construction works to register themselves with Labour Department, she rrated the benefits of the scheme, which includes maternity benefit, welfare pension, disability pension, funeral assistance, death benefit, medical assistance to beneficiaries, scholarships for children of beneficiaries, fincial assistance for marriage of children of beneficiaries, family pension and skill development.

During the programme, the Minister also distributed scholarships to children of registered construction workers.
