Awareness meet on witch hunting held in Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR, May 12: A mass awareness against witch hunting was organized by the District Legal Services Authority, Kokrajhar at Bashbari High School under Kokrajhar police station on Wednesday. R. Bhattacharjee, AJS secretary of District Legal Services Authority, Kokrajhar, said that they had organized the awareness programme on witch hunting to make people aware in the affected villages so that killings in the me of witch hunting could be stopped. The villagers and school students participated in the awareness programme on witch hunting. He said a scheme was to help the families of those who were killed in the me of witch hunting by villagers and miscreants. The victim’s family will get monetary help for sustence. He also hoped that such awareness programmes would help to bring down killings in the me of witch hunting in villages. Ratan Jhangkar Borgoyary, advocate of Kokrajhar Bar Association said that many States had law to take action against those who are involved in killing in the me of witch hunting but in Assam there was no such separate law to deal with witch hunting cases. He also said that if common people were harassed by the security forces in the me of searching for culprits, they could approach the court for justice.
