Awareness meeting against witch-hunting held

UDALGURI, Dec 24: The Udalguri district Legal Service Authority organised an awareness meeting at Palengchuburi village to prevent any untoward incident under the pretext of witch hunting. A misunderstanding was brewing in the village following a case of assault on a daughter-in-law. The Kajiamati Anchalik Committee ABSU and the in-charge of Chapmari Police Outpost, Nripen Chandra Tamuli took prompt action on the alleged rumour of witchcraft and organized the meeting to ease the tension.

 Moinul Islam, the DSP headquarter, A Chowdhary, DSP law and order, rayan Patangia, the Officer in-charge of Udalguri Police Station, Anup Daimari, the general secretary of Udalguri district ABSU and Jayanta Brahma, the panel advocate of DLSA Udalguri, delivered speech and urged the people of the locality to avoid superstitions.

 The meeting was chaired by Purandar Basumatary, the VDP secretary of Chapmari village, and conducted by Chiranjeet Brahma, the Kajiamati Anchalic Committee ABSU president. A person med Sahit Boro allegedly told the police that he was targeted by the villagers on suspect of witchcraft. Later, the meeting have ascertained that the allegation was fabricated and the people were urged to restrain from any such practices and beliefs. Jayanta Brahma apprised people about the pros and cons of the provision of law in witch hunting cases. Prabin Basumari, the PLV member, among others also attended the meeting.
