Tezpur, Oct 8: An awareness meeting on human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation was organized recently by District Legal Service Authority (DLSA), Sonitpur, Tezpur at rayanpur Tea Estate, Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district. The meeting was attended by Audri Bhattacharyya, secretary, District Legal Service Authority (DLSA), Sonitpur, Gitika Sarmah and Abha Barman, members of CWC, Sonitpur and others.  Attending the meeting, Audri Bhattacharyya, secretary, DLSA, said that tea plantation workers in Sonitpur district work in the tea gardens while the children go missing, feared to have been lured by traffickers active in an economically-backward region. She added further that the seriousness of the problem in the context of Sonitpur district could be gauged from the fact that there was a rapid increase in the number of missing persons in the State. People should immediately inform the local police and any NGOs operating in that area for rehabilitation of such victims and further, he or she can approach DLSA, Sonitpur for grant of victim compensation under Assam Victim Compensation Scheme-2015, said Bhattacharyya.

The DLSA secretary further emphasized that human trafficking was a multi-dimensiol phenomenon and its prevention was possible if it was tackled by keeping in consideration the legal, social and economic aspects related to it. Eradication of such a problem needed careful and genuine effort and the socio- economic factors must be taken into account.

However, on the brighter side, several NGOs and self-help groups had been established in the region that were working for the rehabilitation of the victims and were keeping vigilance on the sensitive areas in order to contain the problem. The NGO Global Organization for Life Development is working in this field, Bhattacharya said.
