Awareness programme held to tackle underage marriage

SHILLONG, Feb 26: In an attempt to tackle the problem of underage marriage, the Women organization of Upper Nongjri village on Saturday conducted an awareness programme at Dorbar Hall of Upper Nongjri.

BB Makdoh former President RBYF was the chief guest at the occasion in the presence of B Nongkseh, Rangbah Shnong, Santinora Malieh, Secretary of the Seng Kynthei Upper Nongjri, Ristilda Nongrum president, Ummawbuh, R.Shangdiar, President, Umsohlang Nongjri, M.Majaw, Secretary of mission Nongjri. Dr. DL Nongrum was the resource person at the occasion. In his speech Makdoh, lauded the Seng Longkmie Saiden, for conducting this programme providing vital information to children below 18 years about the problem of underage marriage and the importance of eradicating this problem which can put many household in great difficulty. According to him under age marriage is the main cause of broken homes and families since the young couples don’t have the ability to take the role of parenthood.

Dr. DL Nongrum observed underage marriage as the main cause of school drop outs.

She urged the youngster to first do well in their studies and not to hurry to get married which can bring about many problems not only to themselves but to the family and society as a whole.
