Awareness programme on deforestation

Itagar, Dec 18: The Aruchal Greenery Society (AGS) led by its chairman Kocho mpe on Thursday an awareness programme on deforestation at Govt Higher secondary School Seijosa in East Kameng district.

Speaking on the occasion, Seijosa DFO Ta Tapi called upon the people to shun illegal activities for their interest.

“Man is social animal but the animals of late have become more social than us as we have lost our credibility because of our greed and destroying flora and fau to fulfill our increasing needs,” the DFO categorically said.

Stating that the goal for reducing deforestation was yet to be achieved, ZPM Pani Tayem urged the officials of the environment and forest department to grant proper compensation to the victims whose animal, houses and paddy have been destroyed by elephant and tigers of Pakke Wildlife Sanctuary.

“Pakke Wild Life Sanctuary can be a source of income generation by converting it into a center of tourist attraction which will serve as an identity for the local denizens. We have to preserve and protect the ture’s gift,” Tayem added.

Stressing on non-use of chemicals and explosives for fishing and hunting in the area, he urged the organiser of the programme to organise such events at least 2-3 times in a year to make the people aware of the need for preventing deforestation.

Seijosa ADC T R Tapu while rejecting illegal timber business and fishing stated that to claim their dues people should not hesitate and wait for government rather should approach physically.

He also appealed the organizer to find altertive source of income for those villagers who are compelled to depend on illegal activities for their survival so that they could also create awareness among others.

A senior citizen of the area ma bam while saying that conservation of flora and fau aimed at restoration of a healthy and wealthy society, advised the people to maintain law & order and to punish and impose fine on those involved in illegal activities.
