Awareness programme on rice and pulses seed production held

SHILLONG, Oct 6: Awareness cum field day on Rice and Pulses Seed Production was organized at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region at Umiam on Wednesday by Division of Crop Production, ICAR Research Centre.

The programme was organized to create awareness about the importance of quality seed production of rice and pulses and dissemite the improved production techniques among the hill farmers in Meghalaya.

A total of 170 participants including 150 farmers from six villages of Meghalaya participated in the programme. The programme was started with the welcome address byDr. Anup Das, Head, Division of Crop Production of the Institute.

Addressing the gathering, he said that quality seed is the prime component for getting higher yield per unit area.

Dr Satish Chandra, Head, Division of Crop Protection and Director (I/C) urged the farmers to grow pulses like pea, lentil, French bean etc for betterment of their livelihood and increased income. Eco-friendly magement of pest and diseases are the need of hour for quality seed production, he added.  

He further stated that the scientists are putting their best efforts for developing quality seed production technologies in a participatory approach with the farmers.

Dr. S. Hazarika, Head Division of tural Resource Magement and Nodal Officer-TSP emphasized on soil health and sustaibility to ensure quality seed production of rice and pulses. He also urged the farmers for judicious utilization of available resources for higher productivity.

A Farmers-Scientists interaction programme was also organizedon various aspects of seed production in the region.
