Baghjan village water supply scheme remains a non-starter

From a Correspondent

Doomdooma, Dec 15: Baghjan Village Water Supply Scheme, which was taken up by the State Public Health and Engineering Department at Baghjan Gaon Tiniali under Baghjan Police Station in Doomdooma Revenue Circle of Tinsukia district many years ago to provide pure drinking water to villagers of a vast region comprising Digulturrang gaon, Digulturrang basti, No.1 & 2 Baghjan and Kaliapani, has failed miserably so far to achieve its objective.

As the villages lie in the flood-affected zone, the villagers are compelled to drink water with high iron content. rrating their woes before a group of local scribes belonging to Doomdooma Press Club, the villagers alleged that just after completion of the scheme, the department did supply drinking water to the villages. But that was done for about a week only. After that the water supply was stopped allegedly due to defective pipelines.

Now, in absence of any staff, the water pipes have been damaged beyond repair and the building has been engulfed with weeds, thus presenting a deserted look. A sheer wastage of public money meant for rural development, the whole project has become a non-starter now. The empowerment of the rural folks will remain a distant dream if welfare schemes are not translated into reality in right earnest.
