Ban order on use and sale of polythene bags 'ignored' in Dibrugarh

From our Staff Correspondent

Dibrugarh, April 25: Turning a deaf ear to the district administration’s directives prohibiting the use of polythene bags, sellers and buyers in almost all the market areas in Dibrugarh are still using polythene bags, thus raising concern regarding the growing pollution levels.

The district administration had put a ban on the use and sale of harmful environment pollutant ‘polythene’ two months back. Yet till date, its rampant use by both seller and purchaser is in force. Refusing to comply with the prohibitory orders, hundreds of polythene bags beyond specified micron level are being exported to all the nearby regions of the district. Moreover, instead of using environment-friendly paper bags and cloth bags, the use of polythene is increasing at an alarming level.

Corresponding pelty and fine of Rs 500 on buyers or sellers on use or sale of black polythene too was ignored. Even the district administration failed to carry out awareness in all the market areas where growing use of polythene bags has caused concern over harmful environment hazards.

Meanwhile, the environmental condition of Dibrugarh now faces threats from mounting harmful pollution if the use or sale of all forms of polythene is not impeded totally.  The citizens have urged upon the district administration to take stern action against all those who blatantly ignore the ban order and to make the environment free from pollution.
