Ban sought on employing women for pruning tea plants

Dibrugarh, Jan 10: The Assam Tea Labour Union (ATLU) has submitted a memorandum to the Labour Minister on Monday requesting a ban on the practice of employing women for pruning (with knife) in the tea gardens of the State. The letter mentions that despite similar requests being made in the past, no such initiative had been taken by the government.
ATLU, general secretary, Israel nda and secretary, Santosh Kurmi  in their signed  memorandum, further stated that it was not possible for a pregnt woman to prune as many as 400-500 tea plants with a knife, and appealed that the inhumane practice should be discontinued, considering the health factor of the women.
