Bandh paralyzes normal life

Morigaon, July 2: The 24-hour central Assam bandh called by 26 organizations, including the Karbi Students’ Union (KSU), Tiwa Students’ Union (TSU) and the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) passed off peacefully with some sporadic incidents in the district.

The bandh was called against the State Election Commission’s (SEC) decision not to hold elections to the Tiwa Autonomous Council in six constituencies of Demoria area. During the 24-hour bandh, the students pelted stones at vehicles at Geruwa, Manipur, Kustoli and Basaghat. Besides, activists of some organizations tried to set fire on an Alto car at Manipur area, just four km away from Morigaon town. Morigaon police arrested three persons in connection with the incident. They are Khulamoni Pator, Tia Deka and Paresh Bordoloi. Business establishments remained closed during the bandh. No four wheelers plyed on the road during the bandh hours. The attendance in government offices was sparse.
