Bangladeshi Woman Duped In Assam By A Con Artist

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: A woman from Bangladesh found herself stranded and alone in Assam after being duped by a con artist. This 33-year-old woman claims that she is from Sadullapur, Bangladesh and her husband is an engineer by profession in Bahrain.

The conned woman met the fraudster Sheikh Hridi (Apon) (social media name) on Facebook. Hridi’s social page claimed that he is the president of Bangladesh Awami Sanskritik League, Gopalgunj Zila Xakha, along with being the chairman of Mayer Acol Foundation, an Art Director, an Actor and a student of medicine all at once. As per his transactions with the woman, he informed that he had dual citizenship of both India and Bangladesh and was an avid traveller who has toured most countries.

The woman commented that she had a cyst along with suffering from various other ailments, which is why she came to Assam to get cheaper and better treatment. She was received by Hridi on June 19 at Gauhati airport and they stayed together at an OYO hotel in the city. The next day he took her to Darjeeling and returned the same day. On June 21, they made their way to Kolkatta via train when Hridi got down at Barpeta road, slyly stole gold ornaments worth Rs 4 lakh, 450 Bangladeshi taka and Rs 37 thousand Indian cash, and never returned. Getting down at Bongaigaon station, the woman intimated the RPF about her plight.

RPF transferred her to GOLD (Global Organization for Life Development), an NGO on June 22. GOLD Secretary Kaberi Sharma and In-charge of Prevention of Human Trafficking Jonali Das lodged an FIR against Sheikh Hridi at Dispur police station on Monday with accusations that along with swindling the woman of her money, he also tried to harass her sexually. They also informed that along with lodging a case with CID, they would inform the Bangladesh High Commission about the entire unfortunate incident. The woman had a return ticket for June 29 from Kolkatta and arrangements are being made to escort her safely back to her own country.
