Barak Chitra Mela’s rich tributes to movements in Art

Silchar, Feb 6: All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy. Taking a cue from this proverb, Niharendra rayan Thakur, chairman, Silchar Municipal Board said that both art and craft are indispensable for the overall development and growth. He was addressing at the iuguration ceremony of 19th Barak Chitra Mela at Bipin Chandra Paul Sabhasthal, which began last Sunday. The five-day long exhibition, organized by Barak and Craft Society (BACS), was iugurated by Niharendra rayan Thakur. It has been a long time demand by BACS for establishing an art gallery and museum in Silchar.

Around 20 exhibition stalls have been set up for Barak Chitra Mela, which comprises paintings, crafts, paper crafts, drawings and skill based items. The varied range of paintings that have been exhibited covers the various phases of art movement that revolutionized the world. Paintings from the modern and postmodern era have been kept for exhibition. Rabindra Kalakshetra, Tarapur, voday Kala Niketan, Madhurbond Fatima Laskar L.P. School, Shilpangan, Malugram, Uttamasha Kala Kendra, Sharanga Art Academy. Soi Road, Saradindu Art and Music Academy, Panchayat Road, Academy of Art Universe, Kolkata, The Group of Colours, Art Explora, affiliated by Orchid, Katigorah,  have set up their stalls at the exhibition.

In a bid to enlighten the young minds about the aesthetics of Modernism, Postmodernism, Classicism, Historicism, New Classical and Symbolism in art, craft, paintings, a quiz competition was held on Monday. A group of students participated in the quiz competition, which was purely based on art. Batayan, a renowned book stall of this town, also set up its stall in order to sale books based on art and paintings. Books based on famous painters and theorists of the art movement have been kept for sale.

In the fil alysis, it can be said that organizing such art and craft exhibitions will enlighten the people of Barak Valley, as they will get a taste of an era, which was superlatively intellectual. The various movements in art took the world by storm, which laid the very foundation of Modernism and Postmodernism. Such exhibitions will eble people to comprehend the aesthetics of the then period.
