Barak students’ body slams Assam University for alleged anomaly in PhD admission

Special correspondent

SILCHAR, Feb 4: Assam University, located at Durgako, 18 km from here, often hits the headlines for wrong reasons. Among all the student and youth bodies, All Cachar-Karimganj-Hailakandi Students’ Association (ACKHSA) has been most vocal in highlighting the issues concerning the larger interests of student community in the campus. In a letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of the University, it has drawn her attention to the deprivation of two candidates for admission in pre PhD course (Biotech) for the session 2016.

The letter is based on a representation submitted to the student body by two PhD scholars, Md Masuk Ahmed Barbhuiya and Md zrul Islam Barbhuiya. It has been alleged by them that despite getting admitted in pre PhD course paying all dues as per the selection list of Assam University on January 7, the students have come to learn that the earlier selection list has been cancelled and another fresh list has been prepared. In the second list, they have been placed on the waiting list under general category which they say is not fair and a negation of justice.

Taking umbrage at the development and taking note of the fundamental right of any student to pursue higher studies, ACKHSA has impressed upon the Vice-Chancellor to look into the matter in her official capacity. She has also been urged upon to expedite the issue for resolution so that justice is not denied to the scholars. In case, the seat capacity has to be increased, this can also be considered. The letter of ACKHSA was signed by Rupam ndi Purkayastha, advisor, Biswajit Deb, Debasish Malakar and Sandip Ray, conveners.
