Basudev Ch Das: A tribute
Dr Basudev Chandra Das was a self-made man, hailing from Majarhathi, a small hamlet in Barpeta. He had his early schooling at Barpeta and being a bright student he got admitted into Cotton College to complete his IA in science. In spite of all odds he successfully completed his MBBS degree in 1959 from Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh. Thereafter, he proceeded to Lucknow to pursue his PG Course in Ophthalmology from Lucknow University and earned M.S. This was truly a big step as there was a dearth of specialist medical practitioners then.
Though he got lucrative offers in Lucknow, he came back to Assam. Seeing his academic record he was immediately absorbed in the esteemed Railways as an eye specialist. By dint of his hard work, sincerity and perseverance, he rose to the position of Dy Chief Medical Officer of NF Railway, filly retiring in the year 1993 after putting in more than 30 years of service.
He was a very popular doctor and people came from all parts of the state to consult him. His medical hands had a magical touch which could cure various critical ailments. Even after retirement he was very much socially involved and also offered his medical services to all who came for advice. He also rendered his voluntary services to organizations like the Red Cross, Lion’s Club, Rotary Club, Vivekanda Kendra to me a few.
We as a family have lost a man who was a trend setter and a source of inspiration to us all. He was a man who could be relied upon in times of need. This void created by his death cannot be fulfilled but his memories will always remain fresh with us and guide us in the days to come. Visits by large number of people in last ten days show his popularity among all. We are grateful to all those who visited us or spoke to us giving us strength at this hour of our great loss. Today on the day his aadya shraddha we pray for eterl peace of his soul.
