KOKRAJHAR, Jan 23: The two-day long Gwthar Bathou San got under way from Monday in Bathou Thanshali at Baganshali in Kokrajhar town. Religious conversion was widely discussed during the tiol-level semir along with the practices of Bathou and ubated conversion to different religions.

There were semirs on- (1) Influence of Bathou religion with the culture and tradition among the Bodos and (2) Reason and consequence on Bathouism due to conversion to other religions. The semir which was chaired by Dr. Dinoth Basumatary, Director, Bodoland University, was iugurated by Dr.Subung Basumatary, Principal of Jata College. Prof. Barhungkha Mashahary of Kokrajhar Government College and Prof. reswar rzary of Udalguri College presented their semir papers on the given topics.

During the semir, the conversion from Bathou religion to other religions, especially by the Bodos, was discussed at length. Various reasons and angles of conversion were discussed and seeing the present trend of conversion, the Bathou religious leaders expressed fear that it could bring damage to the Bodo traditiol practices and bond of social unity and integrity as the Bodo traditiol practices get diluted once a person gets conversion to other religion. The semir observed that the conversions were taking place mostly to Christian religion and Satsang.

The second paper was presented by reswar rzary who said that illiteracy, simplicity or flexibility, lack of knowledge on culture and traditions of the Bodos, lack of knowledge on language and literature and superstitions were the factors behind the conversion to other religions. He said that desertion from its own religion had affected the social and traditiol practices and there had been disappearing lots of words after western culture, traditions and passion attracted. He called upon the Bodos to embrace the teaching of Bathou and appealed to stop getting conversion for the greater interests of its own culture, tradition and identity.

The first semir paper reader Barhungkha Mashahary said the Bathou had all resemblances with ture and its practices were based on ture. He said the traditiol festivals and other religious festivals of the Bodos were deeply related to Bathou. He mentioned that social festivals like Kherai, Garja Puja, Kati Puja, Bwisagu, Domachi, Salami Puja, Wngkham Gwrlwi Jai, Hatasuni and other traditiol practices were directly related to Bathou religion.
