Beheaded Body of Unidentified Woman Recovered ahead of Ambubachi Mela in Guwahati

Guwahati: It is shocking to learn that 'Nara Bali' (human sacrifices) are still allegedly conducted at the Nilachal Hills in Guwahati! Well, it might sound mysterious, but here’s a report where a body of an unidentified woman has been recovered in the Nilachal Hills ahead of Ambubachi Mela.

Even the mythology seems substantial as the actual history of the temple has a dark spot in it.

Before going to that part, it is very necessary to mention that the beheaded body of an unidentified woman was recovered near Jai Durga Temple located near viewpoint at the Nilachal Hills.

During investigations, police also recovered items used in performing puja near the body of the woman. The incident sparked sensation across the city.

Meanwhile, City Police have reached the spot and started an investigation into the case. However, the police have yet to ascertain the identity of the woman.

It is to be noted that Prominent Assamese writer and intellect Lakshminath Bezbaroa wrote in one of his books (Mahapurush Sri Sankardev Aru Madhabdev) that, during the reestablishment of the temple by Naranarayan 140 men were sacrificed in front of the Goddess. There was a class of people called Bhogi who were convinced to sacrifice their life for Goddess. These people were allowed to have intercourse with women just before their holy sacrifice. Kalika Purana, the book that was written in the contemporary era and glorifies Devi Kamakhya has mentioned about the rituals of Nara Bali (human sacrifice) in the 64th chapter. Some shlokas even tell about how the head should be put on the deathbed before chopping and what the consequences are if the chopped head gives a smiling posture.
