Bhasha Shaheed Divas in Katigorah

SILCHAR, May 21: Katigorah development committee observed Bhasha Shaheed Divas at their premises on May 19. People from all walks of life attended the commemoration ceremony. The members of the committee along with students, and women decorated the temporary altar of the 11 martyrs with flowers and bouquets. The ceremony began with lighting of the auspicious light by bendu Shekhar th, president of the committee. It was followed by an enlightening discussion session headed by the president.
bendu Shekhar th discussed at length some of the events centreing on before and after the May 19, 1961 firing. He gave floral tributes to the 11 young martyrs who laid down their lives for the sake of Bengali language and its preservation. th’s powerful oration echoed and filled the ambience. In a press-release issued to The Sentinel, it was stated that the Government of Assam should declare May 19 as a state holiday. Report of the Mehrotra commission has been requested to be published at the earliest. They have also urged upon the government to change the current me of Silchar Railway Station to Bhasha Shaheed Station.
The Development Committee has also demanded that Bengali should be used as the official language for issuing any circular or notice in Barak Valley. It has also regretted about the government’s apathy towards Bengali language. The Committee has also requested the citizens to keep the language close to their hearts. Among other who spoke on the occasion, include ntu Das, Prab Kanti th, Ajmal Hussain Choudhury, Pushpa th, Swadesh Das and Pan Lal Deb. The speakers threw light on the martyrdom achieved by those 11 brave persons who lost their lives for the sake of language.
