Bijay Asom Was History Sheeter Even Before Joining ULFA: Police

GUWAHATI: Bijay Asom was a history sheeter even before joining the ULFA (United Liberation Front of Asom)! This is what Guwahati Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar has let the media know.

Talking to the media on Wednesday, the City Police Commissioner said: “Bijay Asom, alias Papu Koch was sent to jail in two cases – a vehicle theft case in Basistha in 2008 and a case relating to the murder beautician Rupali Rongpi in 2011 – before joining the ULFA in 2013. He had ULFA training in Myanmar”

Rupali Rongpi was murdered and her body disposed in the Pagladia river. Bijay Asom was arrested in that case by the CID.

The City Police Commissioner further said: “Bijay Asom came to Guwahati on May 8 for the grenade attack. It was he who rode pillion on the bike Chinmoy Lahakar was riding, and lobbed the grenade at the security personnel near Guwahati Central Mall on the RG Baruah Road, and fled. He, however, pillion rode again on the Scooty of Jahnabi Saikia who was on wait for him near the State Zoo. From there they went straight to Jahnabi’s rented house at Panjabari in the city. Six persons were involved in the grenade attack and all of them have been arrested. The ULFA will keep planning such attacks, and we’re here to counter them.”

Meanwhile, Bijay Asom was produced before the CJM Court on Wednesday. The court sent him to 14-day police remand.
