Biplab Deb new BJP president in Tripura

FROM A CORRESPONDENT

Agartala, Jan 7: As anticipated the RSS backed Biplab Deb has been elected as new president of the Bharatiya Jata Party unimously. The election was held in presence of party’s  tiol secretary Suresh Pujari who was appointed as observer for the election by party president Amit Shah.

After taking over charge Deb said his first task will be to ensure an impressive result in the Village Committee elections in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council area scheduled to be held in mid-February. He said ensuring discipline in the organization also will be his priority.

Deb will replace Sudhindra Dasgupta during whose presidency the party expanded its organisatiol base and also its vote percentage in the two major elections, the TTAADC and in 20 civic bodies.

It is for the first time the BJP won four seats in civic elections in Tripura. Dasgupta welcomed Deb’s election and assured full co-operation in organisatiol matters.

Everything was not quite over the election as four others had filed nomition for the coveted post and there were tension as police had to be posted in the party office to prevent any untoward incident.

However, Pujari persuaded all other aspirants to withdraw their nomition paving way for a peaceful change of guard.

Many party workers had resented Deb’s candidature as he is virtually a stranger to the party workers  here. Though born in Tripura Deb spent most of his time in RSS head quarter at gpur and Delhi and was sent here only few months back.

Sources said the RSS and BJP leadership opted for Deb as two others, Arun Kanti Bhowmik and Subal Bhowmik, who emerged major contenders for the post were newly entrant in the party. Both of them switched over from Congress only after party came into power in Delhi.
