Bird watchers experience mysterious bird phenomenon at Doiheng

Haflong, Sept 21: Hundreds of bird watchers from Karbi Anglong and galand experienced the mysterious bird phenomenon at Doiheng on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Tour AD (Tourism Association of Dima Hasao) has been promoting community based eco-tourism involving the villagers with the aim of helping the villagers for income generation since long and it has made more than five villages of Dima Hasao as member villages of community based eco-tourism.

 Doiheng is a village in the Barail range of mountains, only 21 km from Haflong, where people can witness the mysterious bird phenomenon made famous as the ‘Jatinga bird suicide’. Jatinga and Doiheng are the two places where bird watchers can witness this phenomenon every year starting from late August. But while Jatinga is well known for its bird-watching spots, Doiheng is relatively unknown even to people from the district. Tour AD, along with the newly formed Doiheng village ecotourism committee, organized its first bird-watching event on September 19 and September 20, inviting all bird enthusiasts and ture lovers.

 Doiheng is inhabited by the Hmar tribe and consists of less than 50 households. People experienced the beautiful Hmar dance and folk music followed by a story-telling session where villagers shared many fasciting tales. Though initially there was no hope for the arrival of much-awaited winged guests as the conditions for the coming of the birds were not favourable on Tuesday, but after a wait of few hours the winged guests made their appearance to the bird lovers at Doiheng.

 Talking to the media, Daniel Langthasa of Tour AD, while describing their activities, disclosed that the Tour AD, apart from organizing this event of ‘Bird mystery experience’ at Doiheng, also was part of the ‘Monsoon Experience’ tour package of an intertiol tour agency.

Quim, tour planner-cum- organizer, for the first time placed the district of Dima Hasao as a tour destition in the travel trade show in Barcelo, Spain. He also said that  this was made possible due to the continuous selfless efforts of Tour AD coorditors like Lu Singson, Daniel Langthasa, Avantika Haflongbar, PaSiem Singson, Ishvin idingsa, Biren Teron, Lengoujao Singson and JT Agin Singson.
