Bishnupriya Manipuri dramatist Indra Kumar Sinha no more

GUWAHATI: Renowned Bishnupriya Manipuri dramatist and short story writer Indra Kumar Sinha passed away on Sunday. An injury sustained in an accident a week back led to his death. His death has cast a pall of gloom in the entire Bishnupriya Manipuri community sparsely distributed in Assam, Tripura, Bangladesh and Manipur.

According to Amarmamu Foundation, an NGO, Indra Kumar Sinha was born on November 25, 1932 in a humble family of Pakaipar village, Narsingpur pargona in Cachar in south Assam. His father’s name is Ningthem Sinha and his mother’s name is Akupisena Sinha. He retired from Assam Government service as a block development officer. His wife Bhanumati Sinha predeceased him. He leaves behind two sons four daughters.

Indra Kumar Sinha was a multifaceted personality. He, according to Amarmanu Foundation, is the first modern short story writer in Bishnupriya Manipuri. He has sixteen short stories to his credit. He is also an equally gifted dramatist and an artist. His dramas are very popular. The portraits of Bhubaneswar Sadhuthakur, Gokulananda Gitiswami and others are adorned in every household. He was also an active social worker. He played a key role developing a conducive environment for intellectual and economic development of the Narsingpur area in particular and Bishnupriya Manipuri society in general. He was associated with many social organizations, including Bishnupriya Manipuri Sahitya Sabha. He is a recipient of literary pension from the government of Assam.
