BJP-Congress win equal seats in Sivasagar

SIVASAGAR, February 12: The ruling Congress in Sivasagar suffered a setback on Thursday as it failed to repeat its last Municipal Board election performance, losing most of its seats to the BJP and Independent candidates.

In the 14 Sivasagar Municipal Board wards that went to the polls on February 9, the Congress could retain only 6 out of 12 seats it won last time. The BJP, on the other hand, which even failed to win a single ward in the last MB election, this time won an equal number of seats, while Independent won the remaining two seats.

Congress candidates Azad Alam (Ward No.1), Tasneem Doullah (Ward No.2), Tahsi Karim (Ward No.3), Anil Kumar das (Ward No.4), Priti Pareek (ward No.5) and Mitali Goswami (ward No. 9) won while Banda Kaushik Bordoloi, Prab Jyoti Barua, Trilochan Borthakur, Mrili Konwar, Mridushmita Singha and Kiran Barua, candidates fielded by the BJP won from Wards No. 7,8,10,11,12 and 14 respectively. On the other hand, Independent candidates Rupa Bora and Ra Khan won Ward No. 6 and ward no.13 respectively.
