SHILLONG, Jan 17: The Meghalaya unit of the BJP today said that the sharp rise in crime against women and minors is an indication of the failure of the state government even as it asked for the resigtion of Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh.

“The legislator (Julius Dorphang) himself has confessed to the crime and it took place in the guest house of the Home Minister. So he should tender his resigtion so that an independent inquiry can take place,” the party said in a statement.

The BJP also called upon the state government to speed up the formation of fast track courts so that pending cases of crime against women and minors can be fast-tracked.

Meanwhile, the state unit of the Mahila Morcha of the BJP today said that it will write to the Centre to handover the case to an independent agency to probe the case.

“It is distressing to see that a legislator who is supposed to safeguard the interest of women and children is being implicated in such cases,” state unit of the BJP Mahila Morcha, Bianca Kyndiah, said.

“We will knock the doors of the Centre and ask it to hand over the case to an independent authority like the CBI for a free, fair and unbiased probe,” Kyndiah added.

Meanwhile, the BJP also said that it has taken note of the media reports of the alleged violation of tiol Green Tribul (NGT) directive and corrupt practices in the weigh bridges.

“These shows that the administration in the state has collapsed,” BJP state president Shibun Lyngdoh told mediapersons.

Lyngdoh said that the state government should be held responsible for the violation of the NGT ban and anomalies in the weigh bridges.

The BJP today said that the issues of crime against women and minors and trafficking and the violation of NGT directive and corrupt practices in the weigh bridges will be discussed during the state executive committee meeting to be held on January 21 at Tura and a ‘political resolution’ on these issues will be passed.

The state executive committee of the state BJP will be held in the presence of its tiol General Secretary in charge Northeast and Kashmir, Ram Madhav, lin S. Kohli, who is in-charge of the party in Meghalaya and Prashant Arora, in-charge for issues of Northeastern states.

Moreover, the BJP will also iugurate its zol office building in Tura on the same day.
