GUWAHATI: Despite a slight fall in the share of votes than that of 2014 the BJP has increased its tally by two, but the Congress has failed to add to its number despite a rise in share of votes. This is electoral peculiarity.
An analysis of the share of votes in Assam shows that the BJP got 36.05 per cent of votes this time against 36.86 per cent in 2014. However, when it comes to the number of seats to its kitty, the ruling party has 9, two seats more than its total in 2014.
What is significant is that in 2019 the BJP has fought the election in alliance with the AGP and the BPF, besides getting support from the Rabhas, Tiwas and the Sanmilita Ganashakti.
The share of votes of the Congress in Assam this time is 35.44 per cent against 29.90 per cent in 2014. However, such a rise in the share of votes has failed to add any seat to the party’s tally of seats that has remained unchanged at 3.
The case with the AIUDF is quite different. The share of votes of the party in 2019 is 7.80 per cent against 14.98 per cent in 2014. In sync with the fall in share of votes, the number of seats for the party has also fallen to 1 from 3 in 2014.
The AGP, an ally of the BJP, has registered a rise in its share of votes – 8.23 per cent in 2019 against 3.87 per cent in 2014. The regional party has, however, failed to open its Lok Sabha account.
The fate of the BPF, the other ally of the BJP in Assam, is no different. Despite a slight rise in its share of votes this year, the party has failed to open its Lok Sabha account. The share of votes of the BPF this year is 2.48 per cent against 2.21 in 2014.
The share of votes of the CPI (M) this year is 0.23 per cent against 0.43 per cent in 2014 and that of the CPI is 0.17 per cent this year against 0.19 per cent in 2014. The share of votes of the AITC this year is 0.41 per cent and that of the NCP is 0.06 per cent.
