BJP stages fast, Congress takes out rally

Special correspondent

SILCHAR, Dec 30: The political firmament of the state has been on boil for the last three days with allegations and counter allegations centring round the provocative statements of Congress leaders and the gherao of Rajiv Bhawan at Guwahati by BJP workers in protest. The fallout has been quite disturbing with Congress charging the BJP leaders and workers with violent attack on Rajiv Bhawan and the denial in strong words by saffron frontline functiories, terming the allegation as baseless. But, the impact of all that happened continues to rattle the state politics.

The rumblings of the most unsavoury incidents have its shadow in the valley of Barak. While Congress in all the district headquarters of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi today brought out rallies, condemning the attack of BJP on Rajiv Bhawan, BJP in the same way across the valley held token fast against the indiscrimite arrests of its workers for their alleged role in violence. The police administration was on alert to prevent any clashes or confrontations between the two major political parties.

A large contingent of force assisted by CRPF was on vigilance and banned the route of the rally by Congress through Club Road that takes to the spot where BJP leaders and workers were on token fast before the statue of Khudiram Bose. The rally had to be taken via Janiganj Road to reach the administrative headquarters in order to handover a memorandum addressed to the Governor of Assam through the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar. The memorandum signed by Karnendu Bhattacharjee, president, district Congress committee, demanded tough measures in order to preempt such incident in future. All the frontline leaders of BJP along with workers and supporters joined the token fast.
