BJP sweeps all five Zila Parishad seats in Margherita

DIGBOI: The BJP swept all five zila parishad seats in Margherita subdivision in Tinsukia district. Dibakar Thakur of No 10 Bargolai, Nivajyoti Phukon of No 11 Margherita, Hiranya Devi Baruah of No 8 Golai, Buddha Prakash Upadhaya of No 9 Jagun and Bhanu Sonowal of 12 No Buridehing, all belonging to the saffron party, were elected zila parishad members after the final result of the first phase panchayat poll was declared on Thursday afternoon.

Of the total 1, 90, 711 voters, 67.48 per cent had exercised their franchise in 5 ZPC and 22 gaon panchayats earlier on December 5 to elect 5 ZP members, 22 Anchalik Parishad members, 22 gaon panchayat presidents and 220 ward members. While all five zila parishad members were elected from the BJP, the saffron party further secured 18 AP member seats while the Congress won just four out of 22. Again, 18 gaon panchayat presidents voted to power were from the BJP while just 4 Congress candidates were elected. Similarly, out of 220 ward members in the subdivision, 156 seats were swept by the BJP while the Congress had to remain content with just 62 seats and two went to independent candidates.

The Congress won in six wards in Dwarmara GP, leaving four wards for the BJP. Six wards in Brahmajan GP went to the BJP while four were secured by Congress. Similarly, six wards were conquered by the BJP in Lekhapani GP also. Congress was outperformed by the saffron in Jagun GP too wherein out of 10, only one ward member seat was won by the Congress

Meanwhile, election was held in 11 gaon panchayats for 3 ZP seats -Golai, Borbil and Samdung - 11 AP members seats, 11 gaon panchayat presidents and 110 ward members in Digboi Assembly Constituency wherein the saffron won in most of the GPs, including Golai GP which was stormed by the BJP securing eight seats, leaving just two for the Congress.

Digboi MLA Suren Phukon congratulated the elected office bearers during a meeting held at Tingrai General Field. Terming the victory as a ‘sweeping one’, Phukon in his address said that it was the work done at the grassroots level which made people support the BJP despite all the blame game and conspiracy by the Opposition.
