BJP sweeps out Congress, AIUDF and AGP in Nagaon

NAGAON: As per latest update, the ruling BJP has drubbed the opposition parties like Congress, AIUDF and the AGP in Nagaon district too as in other parts of the State. The ruling BJP even uprooted more or less the indomitable grasps and grassroots bases of some veteran party leaders of the district as well as the State like AGP founder president and former Chief Minister, PK Mahanta, former Congress minister Rokibul Hussain and AGP present core leadership and minister Keshab Mahanta in their respective constituencies like Barhampur, Samaguri and Kaliabor LACs.

The exact fight for public mandate in gaon panchayat level has been seen just between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress in almost all gaon panchayats of the district so far. The alliance party of the State Government, AGP was completely left out from the race. As per latest results of panchayat election in Nagaon district, the ruling BJP has gained 9 ZPC seats out of total declared 16 seats and leads in other 7 ZPC seats till filing of this report.

On the other hand, the opposition Congress has bagged 6 seats and leads only in 2 seats while AGP has to be content with only one seat. On the other hand, BJP grabbed 48 anchalik panchayat member seats, 51 gaon panchayat president seats and 372 ward members seats while opposition Congress won 27 AP member seats, 30 GP president seats and 272 ward member seats. The AGP won only 8 AP member seats, 12 GP president seats and 149 ward member seats.

Meanwhile, AIUDF won 10 AP member seats, 6 GP president seats and 66 ward member seats and independent candidates won one GP president seat, 4 AP seat and 31 ward member seats. Interestingly, the counting of votes is still going on in three counting centres situated in Nagaon Government Boys’ HS School, Nagaon Government Girls’ High School and Dawson HS School in Nagaon. The result of various seats of ZPC, AP members, GP presidents and ward members are yet to be realized or declared till filing of this report. It is, however, expected by the district election media cell that the counting of votes for those seats will continue till midnight or till the wee hours of Friday.

Former Congress minister Rokibul Hussain in the afternoon addressed a press conference held at Nagaon Rajib Bhavan. Reacting to the results of the panchayat poll, he claimed that voting percentage in favour of the Congress had comparatively increased in Samuguri as well as in the district compared to the 2016 assembly election.
