Bongaigaon, July 19: The ‘No helmet, no fuel’ rule received a massive blow in Bongaigaon due to the ‘Rent a helmet for Rs 5’ backdoor method. Bongaigaon district administration had imposed the ‘No helmet, no fuel’ rule in the district since the last few days keeping road safety measures in mind. Under this rule, people who do not wear helmets cannot buy fuel in petrol pumps. Babulal Sarma, Bongaigaon Deputy Commissioner, said that the district administration had imposed this rule to motivate people to wear helmets. “If any petrol dealer violates this rule, action under IPC section 144 will be taken. I appreciate Greater Bongaigaon Press Club for their initiative to organize awareness meetings on road safety,” he said.

But in Abhayapuri, people have been seen using a backdoor method to buy fuel in petrol pumps. Some shops have started giving helmets on rent! “There is a small shop near Abhayapuri petrol pump where you will get helmets on rent at Rs 5. This helmet is only to purchase fuel, after that you have to return it. This is unethical and action should be taken against such shops which are giving people helmets on rent just to buy fuel,” said local conscious citizens.
