Brahmaputra Swells Above Danger Level

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: With the advent of monsoon, the heavy rains in the state have swelled up the mighty Brahmaputra to a point where it has even crossed the danger level. This poses serious threat to the people of the state already heavily wounded by the crisis of flood. The danger level is at 49.68 meter and presently, it has crossed 50 cm above the determined danger level.

The Shankardev and Ajan Pir parks located at Fancy Bazaar beside the Brahmaputra River are overflowing with river water. The parks have been closed down for 10 days. The Lachit Barphukan statue constructed in the river bed has half submerged in the Brahmaputra along with the Vishnu-Lakshmi statue at Shakresyar Mandir in Kalipur.

The Alfresco Grand cruise-restaurant has also been closed down for a few days while ferry services have also been halted. The increase in the water level bodes ill news for the people residing near the river as many precious lives including that of humans and cattle are lost. Now, only time will reveal how much more the water level will rise in the upcoming days, while silent prayers are whispered for the water to recede at the earliest.
