SHILLONG, April 23: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has sought KHADC’s intervention as far as establishment of the Battalion Headquarters by the Border Security Force (BSF) at Rangthong, Mawkyrwat, SWKH District is concerned. In this regards, KSU leaders met Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) CEM PN Syiem on Monday asking him not to issue any NOC for the same. Speaking to reporters, KSU’s South West Khasi Hills Unit president Forwardman Nongrem said that they have confirmed from the DC SWKH that there has been pressure from the BSF side and request from the land owners to speed up the land acquisition process for the Battalion Headquarters. “We strongly oppose the steps and the KHADC should intervene to ensure that land acquisition of the two clans, Sanglein Basan and Syiemlieh Sawkpoh should not proceed,” he said. According to the union, the village of Rangthong is 12 km from Mawkyrwat and the village is safe. Further, the union argued the land will become a cantonment area which will be under the control of Defence and Home Affairs, not with the KHADC.
