JORHAT, March 31: A bullet-ridden body of a young man believed to be in his late 40s was recovered by police at around 2 AM from the Saraibahi area of Jorhat on Tuesday. The deceased, identified as Rofik Ali of Saraibahi Muslim Gaon, was shot in the head from point blank range.

Police have picked up Rajib Borah of Saraibahi Bahek Gaon after a tip-off. Borah was with the deceased from Monday evening. Police recovered two live rounds of ammunition besides an empty cartridge. Later police also recovered another live bullet from the Bahek Gaon area. Initial reports indicated the bullets to be of a 9 MM pistol but by evening police confirmed the bullets to be of a hand-made pistol.

Rashmi Begum, wife of Rofik Ali said, “There was a committee meeting yesterday and my husband took a loan of Rs 20,000 for carrying forward our truck business which is primarily of earth-filling work. Besides the Rs 20,000, my husband also got some advance payment from the earth filling work and it is for the money he has been murdered.”

Meanwhile, locals of the Saraibahi Muslim Gaon told a different story. The place of recovery of Rofik’s body is close to a garage housing many cars and just a few meters away from Rofik’s village. Perhaps Rofik came face-to-face with a gang of car lifters who had come to steal cars from the garage and may have shot dead Rofik in order to avoid identification. Police investigation is on.
