Businessmen in Tinsukia receive extortion notes from ULFA

TINSUKIA: In the midst of the election run-up when Tinsukia district is under thick security blanket, ULFA (I) rebels are serving extortion notes to many businessmen in the district, including Tinsukia town, which has created a fear psychosis among the traders.

According to a source, the extortion notes are being allegedly served by one Rubel Asom, but in many cases the rebels called up the businessmen through satellite and other phones. The extortion demand varied according to business status ranging from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 20 lakh, the source said. The businessmen have approached the district police. A senior police official, however, claimed that most of the demand notes were fake.
