Bust of Neog unveiled in GU campus

GUWAHATI, May 12: A bronze bust of Professor Maheswar Neog, crafted with Rs 8 lakh allocated by the State Bank of India (SBI), was unveiled at Gauhati University campus on Saturday.

Former Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX) president Dr. Nagen Saikia unveiled the bust in presence of GU vice chancellor Dr Mridul Hazarika, SBI NE CGM PVSLN Murty, renowned sculptor Biren Singha who crafted the bust, Prof. Maheswar Neog Publication Trust trustee Dr Pranabsvarup Neog, GU Registrar Suresh Kumar Nath, Prof Ranjit Kumar Deba Goswami and others, a press release said.

Born on September 7, 1915, Prof Dr. Maheswar Neog was an Indian academic who specialized in the cultural history of the North East India, especially Assam, besides being an Assamese-language scholar and poet. He was known as a versatile scholar. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1974, also in the same year he remained the President of Axam Xahitya Xabha. Dr Maheswar Neog was definitely a foremost authority on Indian art and culture and rightly been honoured as a fellow of the National Sangeet Natak Akademi.
