Cannabis worth Rs 27.22 lakh seized in Silchar

Silchar: In yet another successful combat against illegal smuggling of contraband drugs, the Border Security Force (BSF) in a joint operation with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 495 kgs of cannabis (Ganja) at Badarpur railway crossing on Silchar-Guwahati National Highway on Sunday.

Acting on a tip off about suspected cannabis being ferried on NH 44 and NH 37 through a truck from Tripura towards Karimganj, a detailed operation was planned and joint operating team carried out the operation in which one truck bearing registration No HP-12C/5723 suspected to be carrying ganja was intercepted along with its driver and co-driver. On conducting the search of the seized truck, 495 kgs of ganja packed in 23 packets were recovered.

The packets were hidden inside a specially-built cavity, worth Rs.2722500 along with 15000 kgs rubber and cash of Rs.25000. Reportedly, the consignment of contraband goods was loaded from Agartala and was bound for Bihar. BSF has tightened its vigil along the Indo-Bangladesh border keeping in mind the impending general elections in Bangladesh.

BSF is also seeking the cooperation of sister agencies and conducting operations at border and hinterland. The total seizure value including the seized truck, rubber and cash have gone more than 52 lakh rupees. It may be mentioned that during the calendar year, BSF with DRI have seized 1695 kgs of cannabis worth Rs 9324700 and apprehended 6 Indian nationals on the same National Highway in Barak Valley region.
