GUWAHATI: International swimmer from Assam Elvis Ali Hazarika is all set to swim Catalina Channel in August. In a conversation with The Sentinel, just after the official announcement on his new attempt in a media briefing, Elvis reveals much information on his propose expedition. Here is the excerpt.

TS: Tells us in details about your propose expedition.

This time I have decided to swim Catalina Channel. I have already received necessary permission in this regard. The total length of the channel is around 20 miles and I will start swimming at night on August 15 from Santa Catalina in USA. It would be culminated at Mexico shore. This time Rimo Saha, a swimmer from West Bengal, will also take part in the challenge and we would swim in relay system.

TS: It is a shark-infested area. Are you feeling any pressure?

I know. The area is not only shark-infested but also has huge number of dolphins. However the organization which gives necessary permission to the swimmers also provides adequate security to them. One boat and one kayak would accompany us during the swimming. They will also install special chips to our body so that we can always stay under their scanner. Another point is that we have allowed swimming at night only because sharks are generally stayed at the deep of the water during that time.

TS: Expenditure is a big issue. How do you manage it?

Yes. Around Rs 6-7 Lakh would be required for my entire trip. Initially I am spending necessary expenditure from my own pocket. I am also trying to get some sponsors.

TS: How are you preparing yourself for the attempt?

Right now I am giving more concentration on the physical activities. Very soon I will go to Kolkata to swim in river the Ganges.

TS: Tell us on your decision to dedicate this challenging feat to Nilutpol Das and Abhijeet Nath, who lost their lives in the infamous lynching incident last year.

Both of them lost their lives in a tragic incident. I have decided to dedicate my attempt to cross Catalina Channel to Nilutpol Das and Abhijeet Nath so that they can stay alive in our memory.
