CBI searches Tezpur head post office, massive anomalies in accounts detected

Tezpur, December 7:  A three-member CBI team on Wednesday raided the office of the Tezpur Head Post office searching for detail on misappropriation of a large amount of transaction.

The Tezpur head post office located at the heart of the town has services like sorting, processing and delivering mail to the recipients. The Head Post office that covers a total of 47 sub-post offices falling under Darrang Postal Division, is funded by the Government of India. More importantly, besides mail delivering to the recipients, it also deals with fincial transactions, including various savings schemes, Savings and Postal Life Insurance (PLI), savings account, recurring deposit, monthly income scheme, monthly public provident fund, time deposit, senior citizen saving scheme, tiol Savings Certificate, Kisan Vikas Patra and Sukanya Samriddhi Yoja.

However, for the few years severe anomalies against many accounts held by many customers have been alleged. Particularly, when the Core Banking System (CBS) was introduced in 2013 in this office, the silent accounts revived automatically when some officials lackadaisically made some technical mistakes. Sources said that following this misdeed of the officials, the silent accounts that were dead for many years were revived with certain fake figures thereby misleading to a complete disorder of the entire process. Moreover, the officials even withdrew money from such accounts.

 However, the CBI team has been investigating thoroughly since morning till the filling of this report during which all the officials and the employees were questioned regarding the anomalies. “During the period of 2014-15, anomaly of Rs. 1.4 crore took place which has come to light during the investigation,” sources said.

In connection with the anomalies, already one employee of the office has been suspended.
