SHILLONG, Jan 7: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), West Jaintia Circle has demanded that the state government should constitute an independent probe panel to find out the reason behind the changing of the colour of Sopur River water. Andy R. Dkhar, general secretary HYC, West Jaintia Circle while speaking to reporters alleged that the reason the water body has turned blue is because of the waste materials which is being dumped into the river by the various factories located at Lumshnong, East Jaintia Hills District and its adjoining areas. “This river always turns blue in the winter season and people are uble to use it for drinking purposes causing a lot of problem for them,” he said.  He said according to the residents of Sopur the reason behind the river water turning blue mostly during winter is receding of the waster of the river during this season. “Why is the tiol Green Tribul (NGT) keeping silent on this matter even after the river has turned blue,” he questioned. He added, “We know the fact that it’s because all the waste materials from these Cement factories located at Lumshnong are being discharged into the river.” He said the HYC will soon take up the matter with the state government.
