Chattisgarh Governor Balramji Dass Tandon passed away at 90 in Raipur

The Chattisgarh Governor was admitted to a Raipur Hospital after his health deteriorated.

Raipur: Chattisgarh Governor Balramji Dass Tandon died today in Raipur at 90. The veteran politician was admitted to Ambedkar Hospital in the city after he complained of uneasiness.

According to some unconfirmed sources, Balramji had suffered a heart attack and was put on life support system.

With a political career spanning decades, Balramji rose to prominence during the Jan Sangh days, the party which later became Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was a founder member of Jan Sangh.

Born on November 1, 1927, Balramji Dass Tandon had remained a pracharak of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh before getting actively involved in politics to form the Jan Sangh.

Balramji Dass Tandon had been the Deputy CM in the Justice (Retd) Gurnam Singh Akali Dal-Jan Sangh ministry in 1969-70. He had also been a cabinet minister in 1977-79 and 1997-2002. He was elected from Amritsar as an MLA five times and from Rajpura once. Dass had served imprisonment during 1975 Emergency for 19 months.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to express his condolences at the demise of the Chattisgarh Governor.

"Saddened by the demise of Shri Balramji Dass Tandon, the Governor of Chhattisgarh. We have lost a widely respected public figure whose service to society will always be remembered. My thoughts are with his family and well-wishers in this hour of grief, Modi wrote

In another tweet, the Prime Minister wrote," Shri Balramji Dass Tandon spent decades working for peace and progress in Punjab. Passionate about sectors like industry and labour welfare, his administrative experience added great value to the state. He will be remembered for his courage while opposing the Emergency".

President Ram Nath Kovind also expressed his grief at the demise of Balramji Dass Tandon. He wrote" Thoughts with families, especially children, in Kerala as well as Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and other parts of north India affected by heavy rains. Confident local authorities and civil society will rise to occasion to help fellow citizens".
