Child dies, 23 injured as mini bus falls into gorge

Mawkyrwat, Sept 19:  A child was killed and 23 others were seriously injured when a mini-bus travelling from Mawkyrwat to Nongh village skidded off the road near Keniong village in South West Khasi Hills on Monday evening and fell into a deep gorge.

The incident took place at around 3:00 PM and the police rescue operation was immediately sent to the spot for rescuing the victims and bring them to the Community Health Centre, Mawkyrwat for treatment.

Speaking to The Sentinel, driver of the Mini Bus, Kroless Shylla informed that the Mini Bus (ML 06 – 5881) with about 26-27 passengers took off from Mawkyrwat at around 2:00 P.M. but while going through a deep slope near Keniong village, something went wrong in the steering box and he cannot control the vehicle in which it fell into the deep gorge.

South West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, H.G. Lyngdoh, informed that almost all the people travelling in the Mini Bus are the ones who come to Mawkyrwat Market. “About 26 to 27 people were travelling in the bus in which 23 of them were seriously injured and a two-month-old baby from Keniong village died on the spot in the accident,” the SP said, adding that all the injured persons were immediately taken to Community Health Centre, Mawkyrwat for treatment.

Meanwhile, doctors from the Community Health Centre, Mawkyrwat informed that as many as 13 injured persons were shifted to Civil Hospital, Shillong for better treatment. “Many people are injured and about 13-14 patients were sent to Civil Hospital, Shillong for better treatment,” a doctor told this reporter.

SP HG Lyngdoh also informed that the driver of the bus has been arrested and sent for medical examition. “Prelimiry enquiry shows mechanical defect to be the cause of accident,” Lyngdoh said, adding that more reports is awaited and investigation is going on.
