Child dies of drowning in Saralbhanga River

KOKRAJHAR, Aug 4: In a tragic incident, a child med Anish Bahadur Chetry (6), son of Gopal Bahadur Chetry, resident of Patgaon Santipara, Kokrajhar died by drowning in Saralbhanga River on Wednesday evening. Gopal Bahadur Chetry, father of Anish, said a group of children were playing near the river in their village and his son slipped into the river. Saralbhanga River has taken a new route since the recent flood and passes by their village Santigara. Chetry said that the villagers searched in the river and the body of his son was found at least three km away from their village as the current of the Saralbhanga River was too strong. He expressed anguished over the health department and pathetic state of Patgaon State Dispensary, alleging that his son could have been saved if the dispensary had doctors and was functiol. He also said that it took them more than an hour to reach Kokrajhar RN Brahma Civil hospital where his son was declared brought dead. Chetry demanded better medical facilities in Patgaon area. In another incident, an unidentified woman committed suicide by jumping from the flyover near Kargaon in Kokrajhar near Kokrajhar railway station on Wednesday evening. Uma Kanta Ramchiary, IC of the railway RPF, said that an unidentified woman committed suicide by jumping in the railway track from the flyover at around 6.45 pm. The deceased has not been identified.
