Child labourer rescued

JOYSAGAR, March 19: The Sivasagar District Child Protection Council, with the help of the Sivasagar Police and in presence of the District Executive Magistrate, rescued a girl from zira Station Tili recently. The girl is an inhabitant of Chalapathar under Lakwa Tea Estate and she was identified as Lakhi Karwa (8). Lakhi belongs to a poor tea labour family. A rich businessman, Firoz Rahman, and his teacher wife Samim Sabira Rahman asked Lakhi’s parents to let her go with them saying that they would provide her food and clothes as well as education opportunity. But in zira at the residence of the Rahman family, Lakhi was allegedly tortured physically, mentally and sexually by the couple.
A complaint was filed by some local people to the Sivasagar District Child Protection Council. The authorities concerned rushed to the spot and rescued the poor girl. A case has been registered against the Rahman family. The zira Regiol Tea Tribes Students’ Association submitted a memorandum to the Sivasagar DC on Monday and demanded tough legal action against the Rahman family.
