SHILLONG, March 26: The Khasi Students Union (KSU), South West Khasi Hills district, in its observation, has alleged that hundreds of people including children born with disability in Warsan Lyngdoh and Phlangdiloin region have not received any Disability Certificate.
The Union made the shocking discovery during its inspection on March 6 in Nongtynniaw village located in South West Khasi Hills district.
“We want to question the central and state government led by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on where they have hidden all these people and young children born with disability all this time,” Forwardman Nongrem, President KSU said on Sunday.
The Union leader alleged that the silent ture of the government on this issue is because they want to hide the reality from public eyes that there is no effect on humans from the extraction of Uranium in the year 1990.
“The government is also trying to mislead the public by convincing that Uranium Corporation of India Ltd (UCIL) is equipped to protect the people from radiation with an aim to kick start Open Cast Mining/Uranium Drilling and to set up a Processing Plant in the region,” Nongrem said.
He added, “The action of the government clearly indicates that the rights of the people residing in these areas are bulldozed and we sure that there is something behind the scene on the misguidance by the government in the past when the region of Warsan Lyngdoh was then under West Khasi Hills District.”
The Union leader pointed out that many of the persons born with disability has yet to receive any kind of Disability Certificate, hence most of them have been deprived of the various schemes under the Meghalaya government.
In this connection, the Union has apprised Ripr Lyngdoh, Deputy Commissioner South West Khasi Hills (SWK) district and demanded to conduct another investigation in the region to make sure that people born with disability in the region avails the Disability Certificate.
