CIP (M) faces tribal’s wrath in Tripura

FROM A CORRESPONDENT

Agartala, Jan 1: Tribal wrath against the CPI (M) ruled Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council is increasing for its failure to codify the customary laws prevailing in their society for centuries.

The social organisations that, so far, kept their activities confined in petitions and memorandums are taking to streets.

In a significant development, Joy Kishor Jamatia, who was recently expelled from CPI(M) figured in the

frontline of the procession at Khumulung organised by the Jamataia Hoda, the highest body of the

Jamatia tribe, to protest against the failure of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council  to codify the community’s customary laws.

The procession marched through different streets of the Khumulung, head quarter of the Tripura Tribal

Areas Autonomous District Council, and demonstrated in front of the TTAADC, submitted a memorandum to

the executive members Shantanu Debbarma and Joy Bahadur Jamatia.

It is learnt that they were specially aggrieved over the role of the rural development minister resh Jamatia who despite belonging to the community was instrumental in preventing the codification process.

A resolution to codify the customary laws prevailing in the Jamatia community for centuries was scheduled to be passed in the TTAADC session on September 7 but it was filly dropped.

It caused serious resentment among the second largest tribal community in the state.

A senior member of the community and former secretary of the Hoda Rampada Jamatia said the resolution could not be passed in the TTAADC due to interference of the rural development minister resh Jamatia.

According to him resh Jamatia prevented the TTAADC as he was afraid of losing CPI (M) party’s control over the community as recognition of the customary law will strengthen the Jamatia Hoda.

Participation of Joy Kishor Jamatia, a member of the TTAADC, who recently was expelled by the CPI(M) for alleged moral turpitude also earlier accused resh Jamatia for preventing the way of the codification of Jamatia customary laws.

He also alleged that the allegation of moral turpitude was a conspiracy hatched by resh Jamatia  against him.
