Citizen group demands Delhi-Silchar Rajdhani Express

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT

SILCHAR, Dec 8: The present time schedule of the daily passenger train connecting Silchar with Guwahati is causing a lot of inconvenience to the travelling people who belong to far off and remote areas of the Barak Valley. The daily passenger train from here departs at 5 am in the morning. The timing should be changed to 8 am in the morning as the travelling people have to go through a lot of hassles to reach the station on time.

This was stated in a letter to Suresh Prabhakaran Prabhu, Union Railway Minister, by members of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Memorial Swartha Suraksha Parishad on Monday.

The members of the Parishad also demanded starting of a Rajdhani Express from here in Silchar-Delhi route. Haran Dey, president, said that Rajdhani Express usually connects respective state capitals with the tiol capital of the country. But, for the remote northeast region, the Delhi-Guwahati Rajdhani Express has already been extended up to Dibrugrah. He further said that out of the 2 Rajdhani Expresses presently plying from the state, one could be extended till Silchar. He pointed out Silchar is the gateway to Tripura, Manipur and Mizoram.

As Silchar, the second largest city after Guwahati of the state in terms of population and municipal area is strategically located so Rajdhani Express should be started from here, the members added.

They further said that as Barak Valley has a very poor means of communication, more trains should be started to connect this remote region with the rest of the country. They urged upon the Union Railway Minister to look into the issue and take appropriate steps to provide relief to the aggrieved travelers of the valley.
