Citizenship (Amendment) Bill a threat to identity of Assamese people

GOLAGHAT: The members of Golaghat district Mahila Samiti gathered at Trimurti Khetra near the Deputy Commissioner's office on Wednesday to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019. More than 500 women raised various slogans against the Narendra Modi-led BJP government as well as the Sarbananda Sonowal-led Assam Government for giving Assam the burden of illegal immigrants by implementing controversial Bill.

The women's body strongly opposed the Bill and slammed the BJP government for not listening to the voice of the people of Assam despite continuous protests against the Bill. An activist of Mahila Samiti, Juri Das Rajkhowa said that most people across the State were opposed to the Bill the Sonowal government had turned a deaf ear to people's pleas. The Bill is a threat to the identity of the Assamese people and if this Bill becomes an Act, people of Assam will have to suffer economically, educationally and socially. Despite given assurance to protect the interests of the indigenous people of Assam, the government is trying to implement the Bill in any way, said Rajkhowa.

On the other hand, the Karmachari Parishad of Golaghat district staged protest against the Bill near the DC's office. The members of Karmachari Parishad shouted slogans against the government for forcefully giving Assam the burden of immigrants through the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019. The employees of various offices and schools took part in the protest.
