LAKHIMPUR, May 15: Along with various organizations of the State, Assam Science Writers’ Association has also strongly opposed the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The organization considers the proposed Bill to be a tremendous threat to the Assamese language, culture and civilization.

“The process of forming the Assamese nationality is not on the ground of religion, but of language. The present Prime Minister of India once said that the Constitution of India is the sacred book for the Indians. Under such circumstance, the process of forming community on the basis of religion will surely collapse the existence of the Assamese. It is known to all that the provinces of India were formed as per the ‘Tree Language Policy’ adopted during the term of the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s government,” the organization stated in a press release.

The organization submitted memoranda to the President and the Prime Minister of India along with the authority concerned demanding them to initiate steps to scrap the Bill and called upon all to oppose the same, said Dr. Mukunda Rajbonshi and Munin Sabhapandit, the president and the general secretary of the organization respectively.
