Citizenship Bill Row: Massive torchlight rally taken out by AASU in Sarupathar against CAB' 16

Sarupathar: The All Assam Student's Union (AASU) of Dhansiri Subdivision took out a massive torchlight rally in Sarupathar town under Golaghat district on Monday. AASU with several organizations of Dhansiri Subdivision obstructed traffic on the roads by staging massive protest taking placards and fire in their hands and demanding the withdrawal of the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and asking the BJP-led government in the State-wide to clarify its stand vis-a-vis the Bill.

Moreover, while speaking to "The Sentinel Digital" Raju Phukan, AASU organizing secretary of Dhansiri Subdivision stated the agitation against the controversial Bill would be relentless unless it was withdrawn by the central government as it posed a grave threat to the identity of indigenous communities in the State. He also added, life in the Assam state was hit badly since the bill has been passed in Lok Sabha, as street protests continued against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. He also threatended to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi the BJP-led government of India and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal the BJP-led government of Assam that if the Citizenship bill is passed than the Assam will burn into ash. The Citizenship (Amendment) bill, 2016 should be scrapped since it is a threat to the culture, language, land and identity of Assamese people.

On the other hand while interrogating with "The Sentinel Digital" some prominent people of Sarpathar said, "Normal life has been crippled in Assam including Dhansiri Subdivision in Golaghat district following bandhs and protests called by several organisations demanding the withdrawal of the Citizenship Bill. Day by day clashes increases and public gets injured. The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and the Assam's Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal the BJP-led government has seemingly turned there blind eyes as well as deaf ears towards the indigenous people of Assam".

"The peace and social harmony in Assam has been put to the test of time with multi-directional polarization taking place amongst political, non-political and people's groups over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 that has been proposed by the BJP-led government at the centre and endorsed by the ruling BJP party in Assam". Almost 2000 weavers shouted various slogans against the CAB and BJP government. The activist also threatended that there should be no tinkering with Assam accord. The illegal Bangladeshies should not migrate to India.

Meanwhile the activist from different organisations including those of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) the Satra Mukti Sangram Samittee (SMSS), All Tai-Ahom Student's Union (ATASU) and other organizations of Dhansiri Subdivision protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
