Clarification sought

A CORRESPONDENT

SHILLONG, January 12: The opposition parties in the State today have asked the Dr Mukul Sangma led government to clarify what amendments it wants in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution vis–à–vis the traditiol institutions in the state.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting of opposition political parties of the state attended by the UDP, HDPSP, KHM and NPP, UDP working president, Bindo M Lanong said that they have received a letter from the government on the issue.

“The letter does not specify as to what are those amendments the state government is proposing to take up, especially on the matter of traditiol institutions in Meghalaya,” Lanong said.

“Before the meeting we would like to know from the government what type of powers is it proposing to the traditiol chiefs. We would not like to see their powers demoted,” Lanong added.  The meeting, which is scheduled for January 16, will be chaired by the Chief Minister.
