Classical arts establish link with our past: Pranjal Saikia

SIVASAGAR,  July 26: “Classical arts like music and dance not only help us to create a beautiful and peaceful environment around us,  but also establish a link with our past. Dance and music are integral part of our culture and identity, and these should be patronized with a sole motive to achieve greater cultural heights,” said noted Assamese actor Pranjal Saikia.  He was addressing the 70th foundation day celebration of Seujia Samaj Sangeet Mahavidyalaya in Sivasagar on Saturday evening.

Iugurating the cultural evening at tya Mandir,  Saikia said, “We are fed up with seeing the killings, looting, blockade,  burning of tyres,  shops,  vehicles and houses in the me of agitation. Besides, the younger generation is falling prey to the addiction of tobacco products, alcohol and even drugs, which is leading them into a dark future.  Classical dance and music can be useful medium to revive and relive our lives. Seujia Samaj Sangeet Mahavidyalaya is a glaring example of continuation of its tradition which have been devotedly promoting various forms and aspects of culture since its birth in 1945.”

‘Shishu Mahiyan’ Krish Kanta Kalita and guru Makhan Bora were honoured for their contribution on the occasion. Besides, noted actress Purnima Saikia, educationist Dipali Chaliha, district session judge Satyajit Khound,  Dhirendrath Bhuyan and Atari Baruah were also honored. A souvenir was brought out to commemorate the occasion titled Oitjya-Sangeet Shilpa, edited by Dipali Bhattacharyya Baruah and Bipani Saikia. It was also released by Pranjal Saikia. Students and teachers of the Mahavidyalaya performed various cultural activities like Assamese bhajan, Borgeet, fusion of Bharattyam, Odisi and Xatriya dance,  Saraswati Vanda,  Dashavatar Nritya,  Tabla vadan, and various other instrumental performance.

Earlier, the day-long celebration began with flag hoisting by its president Saurav Chaliha at the premises of the Mahavidyalaya in the morning.  Glowing tributes were also paid to great souls like Parag Chaliha,  Atul Sharma,  Sudhir Das,  Makhan Bhuyan and others for their contribution and sacrifice in establishing the foundation of the pillars of the premier institution.
